What would I change for the fold 9 to make the perfect phone?
So I've been using the fold now for 22 days and I am still absolutely loving it you can see my full review here to get my full thoughts on the device. Today though I thought id go over what small tweaks I would make to make this the perfect device.
The first easy thing that samsung should have been doing at least 2 years ago is building in the Qi2 magnets into the phone directly like the iPhone and the Pixel phones, while I don't really charge wirelessly that often I am a big user of stands, grips and mounts. Currently I am running my Z fold 8 case less which means I have had to stick a stupid metal ring to the back of the phone in order to be able to use these things.
The next thing I would look at is re arranging the camera bump in order to reduce the wobble. While there has been a lot of discussion about the cameras on this phone one thing I think most people can agree on is that the thickness of the bump vs the rest of the phone combined with the lenses being stacked down rather than across makes the table wobble even with some cases to be bad. I would like to see Samsung go in the google and apple direction and have a more of a plateau to use apple parlance across the top for the cameras to live in and stabilise the phone.
Third on the list of tweaks for me would be to actually make the phone slightly wider still. While I do like the 4:3 cover screen a lot and it makes for a still very usable 9:16 cover screen personally I would like to see this flipped around and go for a 16:10 main screen resulting in roughly a 4:3 cover screen. this would keep the outside screen usable still for messaging and social apps but optimise even further the inside screen for watching video with almost no black bars. Some may argue for 16:9 to completely eliminate black bars but I think the compromise of 16:10 would mean that it is also very good for multitasking, gaming and those other use cases too.
Going hand in had with this the last tweak I think samsung should really go back to the selfie camera on the main display (and in my opinion the cover display too) to be an under display camera. These cameras are there for pretty much one purpose which is video calls. Unlike slab phones if you want to take a selfie you would never use these cameras you would use the main cameras given you can unfold the phone but keep the controls on the cover display. So given I would so rarely use those cameras I would happily take a hit on quality for them in order to hide them most of the time.
The final thing I would tweak is maybe a little bit old man yelling at cloud but given the current ram and storage crisis going on I think there is renewed interest in this kind of feature. Given the prominence of eSIMs these days why not go back to making the sim slot a dual purpose slot so if you do use eSIMs you can still make use of that slot. This is not even a what if feature as many phones in markets like china and India let you do this with their second physical sim slot so there is almost no reason Samsung couldn't do this. For a media consumption focused device this would also be a big boost meaning if I was going on a trip I could load up on TV and Movies locally so I'm not relying on crappy train or plane wifi.
I think if Samsung made these tweaks for the fold 9 the device would be my absolute perfect phone and would boost the fold 9 to be a no brainier for not just me but a lot more people.
